What happened to the iconic styles of Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Linsey Lohan, Destiny's Child in the early 2000s? Whether it's on Instagram, trendy boutique websites, or Pinterest boards, the wave of 2000's trends is rolling back into style. Low-waisted pants, tracksuits, animal prints, and jewel tones are a few examples we have witnessed this year, but what happened to these trends in 2010-2019?
Over the years, fashion has changed and repeated itself frequently because nothing is in style for only one season. Throughout the 2010s, hints of the 90's fashion trends were visible with sheer tops and dresses, hair bandannas, cardigans, and mom jeans.
Although there will never be an exact duplicate of past trends, past generations' influence is present in every trend today. The lacy camis, fuzzy bags, and cheetah print accessories all reflect different trends during the 2000s. Still, some style analysts argue that the "y2k" (the year 2000) trends of 2020 are not an accurate representation of the 2000s! They refute that the glorification of trends in the 2000s does not highlight the less desirable style choices made in the 2000s (e.g., bubble skirts, distasteful vests, capri pants, etc.). The adaptation and recycling of 2000's trends in 2020 is a phenomenon that does not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. So, stock up on animal prints, mini sunglasses, flared jeans, and tiny tops this fall!
Lastly, remember to always be mindful of the environment when shopping. While boutiques like Princess Polly and Shein provide cheap and on-trend products, new clothes are not a sustainable way to shop. Instead, shopping at local or online thrift stores to find unique pieces can help incorporate old trends back in style!
